Sensory access in higher education
CAE’s Director, Jean Hewitt, was a primary member of the research team and compiled the guidance on buildings within the report, published in 2009.
This guidance was developed in response to evidence from research into the experience of disabled students, commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) during 2008. This research, along with other sources, suggests that there are cases in which students who are blind or partially sighted, deaf or hard of hearing, or within the autistic spectrum are disadvantaged by their campus environment.
