Access to Historic Buildings and Environments

Overview

How can historic buildings be made more inclusive? And how do we balance accessibility with conservation?

This course explores different approaches to making historic environments more accessible, in line with best practice and statutory frameworks. This course is a great starting point for anyone wanting to understand the practicalities of making accessibility improvements in the unique context of heritage, older and listed buildings.

Course outline

In this interactive workshop we will explore:

  • Diversity and access requirements in the historic built environment.
  • Statutory frameworks including the Equality Act, planning permission, building regulations and listed buildings.
  • Balancing access and conservation and the role of access audits.
  • Case studies and examples of good practice.
  • Group discussions and exercises.

Through group exercises and discussion, participants will share ideas, ask questions, and reflect together, building confidence and a stronger understanding of the complexities in designing more inclusive heritage environments.
