Overview
This course is for anyone wanting to learn the principles and technical standards for wheelchair accessible housing in Approved Document M, Volume 1: Dwellings.
Our interactive session provides a comprehensive introduction to the different housing categories in the regulations applicable in England, highlighting the essential design distinctions between ‘adaptable and accessible dwellings’ and ‘wheelchair user dwellings’.
Ideal for a wide range of professionals – including architects, access consultants, occupational therapists, designers, building control officers, planners, developers, and housing providers – this course equips you with the knowledge to confidently deliver more inclusive and future-ready housing.
Course outline
During the session we will explore:
- The evolution of relevant history, current standards, and key policies.
- The roles of planning and building control authorities in shaping accessible homes.
- Insights into designs for category M4(1) and M4(2) dwellings.
- Technical requirements of category M4(3), including the distinction between wheelchair adaptable and wheelchair accessible homes
- Essential technical specifications that shape accessible homes, including entrances, kitchens, living spaces, bedrooms and bathrooms
Through group exercises and discussion, participants will share ideas, ask questions, and build confidence and understanding of accessible housing requirements.

About the trainer
Vin Goodwin is an NRAC-accredited access consultant with over 25 years’ experience in inclusive design and a BSc in Architecture. He has worked on projects ranging from community initiatives to major developments such as Historic Royal Palaces, Somerset House, and the London Olympic Park. Vin delivers CAE courses on topics including Design & Neurodiversity, Wheelchair Accessible Housing, and Access Auditing and Equality Act.
