Overview
This highly interactive 2-day course is for anyone looking to advance their auditing skills and understanding of inclusive design in the built environment.
Developed and continually updated for over 30 years, this course is unique in the sector for its depth and quality, and has trained generations of professionals – from access consultants considering NRAC accreditation, to architects, planners, surveyors, and local authority and housing teams.
Course outline
In this interactive training course we will explore:
- Accessibility awareness and models of disability.
- The Equality Act 2010, other relevant legislation and technical design standards.
- Key principles of inclusive design in the built environment, design guidance and access strategies.
- Appraisal and auditing methodologies.
- Audit reports and making recommendations.
Through group exercises and discussion, participants will share ideas, ask questions, and reflect together, building confidence and a strong understanding of inclusive design in the built environment.
A thorough grounding in highly relevant legislative frameworks and technical guidance, this training course equips professionals in a wide range of roles to confidently identify access barriers and solutions in the built environment, including those considering a career in access auditing or interested in inclusive design, designers improving their knowledge and those looking towards possible future NRAC accreditation.

About the trainers
Ann Sawyer and Vin Goodwin have developed and delivered our Access Auditing & the Equality Act course since the original course piloted in 1996.
Vin Goodwin
Vin is an architect and NRAC-accredited access consultant with over 25 years’ experience in the inclusive design field. He has worked on projects ranging from community initiatives to major developments such as Historic Royal Palaces, Somerset House, and the London Olympic Park. Vin delivers CAE courses on topics including Design & Neurodiversity, Wheelchair Accessible Housing, and our award-winning Pathways Academy course.
Ann Sawyer
Ann is an architect and access consultant with decades of experience working at the forefront of inclusive design. Her work spans education, historic buildings, and major projects including Imperial College London and Brent Civic Centre. Ann has lectured at the University of Reading and Portsmouth, co-authored The Access Manual, and is a design surgeon for Urban Design London.
