Accessible design specialists the Centre for Accessible Environments (CAE) is celebrating being on the award winning team responsible for the new Borough Viaduct project in south London.
CAE provided access consultancy to architects Jestico + Whiles as part of the £52million Network Rail Thameslink programme to widen the railway at London Bridge. The project was selected by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) from a shortlist of 64 projects in London including iconic buildings like the Shard and Tate Britain.
The development work affected 20 local buildings including some listed buildings, requiring remodelling, reconstruction and adaptation. CAE used their experience of major construction projects to ensure access for disabled and older people is maintained and improved. In addition, CAE gave specialist access advice on all new buildings developed.
Construction on this historic site successfully blends old and new. The viaduct passes over Borough Market and overlooks Southwark Cathedral. CAE gave recommendations over the projects five year life span to improve access without losing London’s heritage. The conservation area has retained important cultural features like the Victorian market place while modern rail infrastructure will cut delays and increase capacity.

Regional award winners will be put forward for the RIBA National Awards with the winners announced in June 2014.
